Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate oral health strategies in 1980s and prepare the basic data for establishing oral health strategies in 21st cenry. The authors had examined oral diseasees in 1990 and calculated the numberif teeth
indecated for extraction. The numnber of examinee was 3,000 which were composed of 5, 12, 15, 35-44, 65-74 age groups. The number of teeth indecated for extraction of other age groups were calculated from above 5 age groups. And the arthors had calculated the percentage of extraction required by causes in Koreaa.
The results obtained were as follows;
1. The percentage of extraction required by dental caries was 85.3%, periodontal disease was 8.5%, prothodontic reason was 0.9% and other causes was 5.3% in 1990.
2. The percentages of extraction required by causes had not been changed in 1980s.
3. Also in the early 21st centry, for reducing the number of extracted tooth due to dental caries and periodontal disease , the government authorities and the people must try to conquer dental caries and periodotal disease cooperatively as well
as individually.
4. The number of teeth indicated for extraction was 7,747,903. Among them, the number of teeth indicated for extraction because of dental caries was 6,612,113, periodontal disease was 655,703, prothodontic reasons was 71,041 and other causes was 409,049.
5. For lengthening span of tooth life in Korea, dental caries and periodontal disease were conquered preferentially.
6. In order to prevent dental caries and periodontal disease, the ministry of Health and social Affairs must to establish and carry out a national policy for oral health.
